It is important to be safe when dyeing. Wear gloves. All utensils (including pots) used for dyeing should not be used for food preparation. Protect your surfaces with a drop cloth or towels. It is recommended to use a dust mask when you measure out the dye powder because the particles are small. Once you have mixed the dye with water, you do not need to wear a mask. You can measure out your dye on a slightly damp towel to trap any particles.
You will need a stainless steel or unchipped enamel pot. Measuring teaspoons and cup. Cups or jars to mix your dye with water. You will use a stove top or electric burner.

For rainbow dyeing, you will also need plastic wrap, a stainless-steel-leaved vegetable steamer, and a sponge brush, squeeze bottle, or syringe for applying the dye.
